The Annotated Mother Goose, William S. Baring Gould & Ceil Baring-Gould, Meridian, 1967. This book is out of print, but a used copy may be available at amazon.com.

Panati’s Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things, Charles Panati, Harper & Row, 1987. Mother Goose and everything else is explained.

Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes (2nd Edition), Iona and Peter Opie, Oxford University Press, 1998. The mother of all things Mother Goose.
